Reynard Films Germany

Reynard is an anthropomorphic fox and trickster figure in allegorical German, French and English fables. In 2014, Katharina Weser and Georg Neubert joined the Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris programme for young European producers and the idea for the Reynard Films production company was born. In January 2016, Reynard Films moved to Leipzig. The company specialises in short and feature-length films and web series and undertakes service productions in the MDM (Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung) funding region as well as producing its own projects. With the fox in its logo, Reynard Films is particularly interested in telling stories from the world of fairy tales, diving deep into surreal and magical kingdoms that can only exist in films and giving viewers time off from reality – which has been the task of the movies ever since day one.

Inspired by the amazing beauty of deep-sea life, “Bioluminescence” blurs the line between biological truth and science fiction in this addictive and epic story fully aimed at contemporary audiences. Season one of “Bioluminescence” takes place during the Archimedes expedition: an ocean voyage triggered by the appearance of anomalous bioluminescent life forms blooming off the coast of Antarctica. The expedition is mounted by the International Centre for Oceanic Research (ICOR). At the frontiers of marine exploration, ICOR is to the ocean what NASA is to space.

The first season consists of ten episodes of 10-15 minutes each in a flexible format. In each episode, Liz breathlessly presents the expedition’s developments on her personal journey of discovery. She never shies away from the most intimate and revealing details as she faces overwhelming challenges and conquers her fears. Liz creates her vlog broadly in the style of prominent, prolific YouTubers like Casey Neistat, Ben Brown and Destin Sandlin, and draws storytelling inspiration from the slick investigative approach of the “Serial” podcast. Imagine “The Abyss” made from the point of view of a vlogger: an immediate and visceral story written by and for millennials. A teaser for “Bioluminescence” is already available. The proof of concept for an interactive deep-sea VR experience is slated to start production in summer 2019. In addition to the original digital series format, “Bioluminescence” presents opportunities in feature film, long-form animated fiction, VR and games.
