TALENT PROJECT

TV series 13x22’, in development
GENRE: Mystery Adventure
TARGET GROUP: 8–10 years
DIRECTOR: Lindsay Vluttert
STORYBOARDER: Esther Heerikhuisen
HEAD OF ANIMATION: Nigel Lievaart
ANIMATION TECHNIQUE: 2D paint animation
TOTAL BUDGET: 1,700,000 EUR
IN PLACE: < 20%

Synopsis:

In the underbelly of the future, all the most extravagant vigilantes and daunting creatures on earth make use of one delivery service: Mystery Delivery, a specialised department that delivers all kinds of packages to the most bizarre places in the world. Who would dare to work for such a company? The naive and adventurous Nola and the whimsical, flamboyant Taro, of course! Nola joins Mystery Delivery with the aim of finding her estranged mother, while Taro simply wishes to become a legendary deliverer.

Lindsay Vluttert: (Director)

‘As a person who has a tough relationship with my family, and someone who has found a lot of comfort in friends I have met in the last couple of years, I wanted to make a series that shows your true family is not necessarily the one you are born into. This series is about finding the people who make you feel at home and define your place in the universe: not as an end goal, but as a constant process of learning and understanding the true definition of family. Every place the protagonists visit, every package they deliver, every person they meet, tells a new and exciting story. And that is the power of “Mystery Delivery”.’

Coen Balkestein: (Producer)

‘The “Mystery Delivery” team, a total of twelve fellow graduates, has inspired me to choose the path of producer. With this series, I wanted to give them the freedom to come up with a story they would love to create and work on after graduation. Now, as the pitch bible is ready, it is my mission to show it to the world.’ (Coen Balkestein)

TV series 26x5’, Game, Mobile Content / App, audio, print, in concept
GENRE: Comedy, Adventure, Educational
TARGET GROUP: preschool
DIRECTOR: Eliza Plocieniak-Alvarez A
NIMATION TECHNIQUE: digital cut-out, analogue painted textures
TOTAL BUDGET: 1,300,000 EUR

Nitso is a big yellow yeti who wants to learn the alphabet. He also likes to eat a lot. He even eats his ABC book... Oh no, Nitso has eaten his homework! How will he learn the next letter of the alphabet? Well, he can always ask the Great Master Tebahpla. The wisest of all people Tebahpla knows everything and anything about everything. But will he manage to help Nitso? The apparently simple task of learning the alphabet becomes filled with discoveries and humour. Come and join the adventure! “The Very Hairy Alphabet” teaches children both English and the alphabet in a unique way. First of all, we want to give kids the opportunity to go beyond the same old ‘A is for apple’ routine: Nitso learns that B is the ‘big bear in a bikini’; H has ‘hilarious hiccups’ and S ‘smelly socks’.

We believe that the bold humour and smart gags will make even the most reluctant learners love the alphabet, because learning by having fun is the most effective way of learning. Playing with humour, Tebahpla and Nitso form a great duo to show children that something wonderful can be created even through failure. “The Very Hairy Alphabet” is also unique in its visual style. The hand-painted, cut-out elements catch children’s attention with their haptic texture and vivid colours, making the events of the story feel that much closer.

TOTAL BUDGET: 600,000 EUR

Night Cat, a cute little house cat, has never seen the world outside his home. But with the help of a bat called Betty, he becomes a night-time superhero who defends the streets. His owners are not supposed to find out about his secret superhero identity, just as his enemies should never learn that he is a spoiled house cat during the day. To keep his secret, he only turns into Night Cat when everybody is asleep. And to disguise his identity, he blackens his white spots with soot, which also makes him nearly invisible in the dark. Together Night Cat and Betty fight enemies and make the neighbourhood a safer place.

‘Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved animated series and movies. Animation gives substance and shape to our inner world of the imagination and dreams and this is kind of magical. What inspired me to create “Night Cat”? I am a cat lady myself. My Persian cat Nero is sometimes nearly invisible when he stands in front of something black. This is just one of the little inspirations I’ve received from my cats. Who doesn’t love cats and superheroes? I certainly do and I’m sure there are many more who feel the same and who will love this series.’ (Jessica Drechsler)
‘Of course I’m a cat owner myself and I enjoy pitching my personal experience with cats into the project. I love the challenge that comes with producing a series for kids. An amalgamation of superheroes and animals is a great concept for a young audience. The unique and simple style of the animation and look of the series will make it easy for kids to relate to the characters – and it’s not just ‘good looking’ but also very efficient for the production.’ (Nina Schwarz)

Imagine a world populated not only by humans but also by mysterious creatures who have unique abilities and create curious effects on their surroundings. There is only one of each kind and they all live in different areas of the world. Their effects are sometimes helpful to the humans around them, sometimes bothersome and sometimes even a real threat! Kun and Nuri are two scientists who travel the world together with captain Terry and his houseboat to find out more about these strange beings.

In the golden age of television, Europe is now developing high-end drama series but it still lacks animated content for young adult audiences. The most popular of these originate in either the US or Japan, two cultures with which most of our generation (people under 35) have grown up and feel comfortable. We would like to use some of the virtues of these two animation traditions: chiefly, the melancholy of the East and the humour of the West, while adding a European flavour. Our series is inspired by fantastic themes as well as the adventurous endeavours of people like Charles Darwin and Alexander von Humboldt – Europeans who travelled the world to better understand it. We are fascinated by the exploratory spirit of our ancestors and want to revive it in a world that has faith in progress but, concurrently, is completely incomprehensible. To this end, we are aiming for a style that is distinctly graphic and recognisable while at the same time being dreamlike.

The little fox Hugo has a happy but quite unusual family: his parents are geese. They live a harmonious family life until one day Hugo witnesses a grown fox eating a goose. This results in the most challenging and difficult situation our little patchwork family has ever had to face, before Hugo ultimately discovers who he really is and that family is a feeling and not a matter of heritage.

“Family Bonds” is a project that is very close to our hearts, since the topic of being different in this world is currently developing in an alarming direction. With this heart-warming story about the true meaning of family, we aim to make people stop looking at all our differences and instead see what connects us all: love. It might sound a little cheesy, but we strongly believe that this is a message that is worth passing on to the next generation, so that one day this world might be a peaceful place filled with understanding for everyone. Our illustrative and playful animation style is reminiscent of children’s books and will appeal to kids and parents alike. We would like to develop the concept of our already produced short film into a series that presents different types of families and how they cope with difficulties and criticism – both internally and externally.

ANIMATION TECHNIQUE: 2d animation, live action, rotoscoping
TOTAL BUDGET: n/s

SHORT SYNOPSIS The grandparents' bedroom, with simple clay walls. The clothes hanging on the wall and their bright colours. The long way to school. A red thread to hold on while walking alongside the delta of the River Niger. The alphabet loudly sung together with classmates. These are memories. Eno's memories, a Nigerian woman. The happiest memories she chose to bring with her from her homeland to Italy, where now she's living. Eno is one of the five characters of FILI - Threads. The animated documentary tells the happy memories linked to the countries that five immigrants have left behind to get to Italy. Moments firmly hang on to disant countries, hidden in the memory of those who lived them. These memories allow to see protagonists, not only masses and crowds. Single prtraits of persons, not anonymous shots of migration flows.

AUDIOVISUAL APPROACH The documentary uses 2d animation and live action footages. The style the animations refer to are the carnet de voyage/travel diaries. Each encounter is set in the place that now the protagonists call home, whether it's a house, a room or a tent in a reception center for migrants, a kitchen in a restaurant, a carpet in a mosque or an hotel room. Only the protagonists' voices guide the animations and the sound design is very realistic.

Teo the orphan is found under a tree near the shore of San Peter Island. When he sneaks into the house of Agata, an alleged witch, everything changes: he is catapulted into a parallel world where folktales are real. Teo joins the crazy league of the Taleraiders, searchers of magical objects that must be captured from the evil BauBau, who is hungry for human fear. Together with his new friends in the league, and backed by the power of the Four Winds, Teo explores one hundred seas of tales, battling to save the day and find out who he really is. There is a world out there waiting to be explored. A world that lies beneath the stones of an ancient castle, on the top of a snowy mountain or at the bottom of a shining sea. It is a world of beautiful and scary folktales that traverse our landscapes like invisible roots.

“Taleraiders” is fun and filled with the thrill of adventure; it mirrors the sensation we’ve all felt spending a summer day hunting for pixies and mysteries, or wondered at each step of the way on the journey to growing up. “Taleraiders” features real places that become magical thresholds for every kid brave enough to cross them. It is being developed as a frame for different contexts and media, involving partnerships with European cultural institutions in the creation of thematic digital routes and apps, with all the possibilities given by the link to real, existing places. “Taleraiders” aims to be the fireplace around which we will tell tales of the differences that bond us.

We follow the life of Crab who lives in an aquarium in the kitchen. The tension is rising because he knows his turn is coming soon. But then something extraordinary happens: this kitchen is on the Titanic and now the ship is sinking. In the huge chaos that ensues, Crab survives and we see him with the objects and drowned animals in the kitchen as he is returned to the bottom of the ocean.

The film will have a very shallow depth of field with limited colours and a big contrast in the sound design of scenes in and out of water. Animals are our silent companions: they witness the greatest achievements and most terrible failures of humankind. In most cases, little attention is paid to them. They live their lives in parallel to ours: they are our food, our tools, or we simply don’t notice them at all. Usually, our victory means death for them. But there are moments when the situation changes… With this film, I hope to arouse empathy and show the fragility of animals in the midst of the deadly chaos created by humans. I want to tell a story that everybody knows, but from a completely different perspective. The idea for this film is part of a bigger concept for a series of short films showing important events in human history from the perspective of animals.

TV series 10x10’, standalone VR experience, in development
GENRE: Hard Sci-Fi
TARGET GROUP: 20–30 years
HEAD OF ANIMATION: Prefrontal Cortex, Abel Kohen
ANIMATION TECHNIQUE: photorealistic CGI
TOTAL BUDGET: Series 200,000 EUR / VR experience 500,000 EUR
IN PLACE: 20–50%
PARTNERS: Prefrontal Cortex (DE), IKO (FR)

Inspired by the amazing beauty of deep-sea life, “Bioluminescence” blurs the line between biological truth and science fiction in this addictive and epic story fully aimed at contemporary audiences. Season one of “Bioluminescence” takes place during the Archimedes expedition: an ocean voyage triggered by the appearance of anomalous bioluminescent life forms blooming off the coast of Antarctica. The expedition is mounted by the International Centre for Oceanic Research (ICOR). At the frontiers of marine exploration, ICOR is to the ocean what NASA is to space.

The first season consists of ten episodes of 10-15 minutes each in a flexible format. In each episode, Liz breathlessly presents the expedition’s developments on her personal journey of discovery. She never shies away from the most intimate and revealing details as she faces overwhelming challenges and conquers her fears. Liz creates her vlog broadly in the style of prominent, prolific YouTubers like Casey Neistat, Ben Brown and Destin Sandlin, and draws storytelling inspiration from the slick investigative approach of the “Serial” podcast. Imagine “The Abyss” made from the point of view of a vlogger: an immediate and visceral story written by and for millennials. A teaser for “Bioluminescence” is already available. The proof of concept for an interactive deep-sea VR experience is slated to start production in summer 2019. In addition to the original digital series format, “Bioluminescence” presents opportunities in feature film, long-form animated fiction, VR and games.
